A joint venture between the sumner community group and the CCC parks and reserves team to restore the dune systems to protect our coastal environment.
For the past five years volunteers have organised working bees and planting days to remove invasive species from the dunes including maram grass, lupins, saltbush and exotic pasture grass species to name a few.
The dunes areas are then revegetated with native species endemic to the coastal regions and ecosystems, thus allowing the dune to naturally rebuild and restoring coastal ecosystems.
The areas are actively managed at both sumner and Taylor’s mistake beaches with regular weeding to control invasive species. In fill planting occurs to reduce the areas for invasive species to colonise.
This is an ongoing project and would not be successful without the help from all our awesome volunteers who regularly give up their time to look after our little corner of the planet.
