Mahakirau Forest Estate Society Inc.
Weedbuster Type: Group
Contact Person: Judi Foster
We are an active group that works in a 600 hectare private conservation estate in the Coromandel ranges. The vast majority of the area is impressive native forest but we do have weed issues, largely where there was disturbance forming the 5km estate road. The group consists of motivated co-owners who meet regularly for working bees. The weeds we tackle, in order of the scale of the problem they represent, are gorse, blackberry, acacia, and woolly nightshade. In some areas of the estate that were farmed, we are also using ‘old man’ gorse as a nurse crop for regeneration of natives.
