Fostering native ecosystems in Golden Bay and the Top of the South
Project De-Vine Environmental Trust is a non-profit charity established to eradicate or progressively control noxious vines throughout Golden Bay, but primarily on the eastern side of the Bay. It evolved out of Rocklands Road Weedbusters that was set up under the auspices of the Golden Bay branch of Forest and Bird in September 2007. This Weedbusters group started out of frustration with the endless banana passionfruit seeds being brought on to clear properties, by birds, rats and possums. The only way to alleviate the situation was to find a way to encourage as many neighbours as possible to clean up their vines. This small beginning has led to a much larger project which involves all of Golden Bay.
Now, in 2022, we are tackling a wide range of pest plant and tree species as well as a wide range of environmental activities involving native tree planting, their support, and setting up a trapping programme. Our weed control programme still continues across Golden Bay and some control work across the rest of Tasman district, and includes pest species in the Regional Pest Management Plan of Nelson and Tasman Districts as well as wilding pines and some locally out of control plants not in the RPMP.
