Profile
We are looking after weed (and predator) control in the Sandspit area, supported by local residents and the local council. We have several patches of native bush, some owned by DOC, some council reserves and some roadside areas, as well as bush on private sections, many of 2 acres. We try to keep these areas as free of exotic species as far as possible and concentrate on those areas visible from the roads. Wattles have been our major pest in the past, and seedlings continue to germinate, but few large wattles are now visible when driving through.
This year we have had a blitz on agapanthus growing along the roadsides. It has proved difficult to eradicate by spraying, but a lot less got to the seeding stage this year. Perhaps the most difficult weeds we have to contend with are blue morning glory and jasmine as they generally cannot be sprayed without damaging their host trees. The steep terrain, particularly along the Sandspit foreshore adds to the difficulty.
We shall continue to keep up the good work!
